Who we are

i-HEATPUMP was founded to address a growing problem in low-carbon heating.

Heat pumps work - that isn’t the issue. Heat pump technology is often the most efficient source of heat we have, but they must be installed, commissioned and maintained correctly to perform consistently.

Modern heat pump systems are complex, dynamic, and highly sensitive to:

  • design decisions

  • configuration

  • controls

  • hydraulics

  • occupant behaviour

When performance drifts, the root cause is rarely obvious. Too often, engineers are expected to diagnose complex systems under time pressure with limited data available to them.

i-HEATPUMP exists to offer an alternative.

What we do

We specialise in independent, data-led heat pump diagnostics.

Rather than relying on assumptions, error codes or single-point measurements, we take a whole-system view. We combine on-site inspection, operational data, and engineering judgement to understand how a system is actually behaving over time.

Our work focuses on:

  • Verifying real-world performance

  • Identifying root causes of inefficiency, instability, or poor comfort

  • Translating complex findings into clear, practical recommendations

The result is not just a snapshot, but understanding - a pathway to improvement.

How we work

Our approach is built around four principles:

  1. Verify - confirm how the system is operating and replicate or observe the customer complaint

  2. Diagnose - identify interacting issues across controls, hydraulics, sensors, configuration, and use patterns using a range of scientific and data analysis techniques

  3. Fix - provide clear, prioritised recommendations that installers or asset owners can act on

  4. Learn - feed insight back into better design, commissioning, and operation going forward.

What we don’t do

  • We don't criticise other engineers

  • We don’t criticise or prefer any brand - we are brand agnostic

  • We don’t sell equipment

  • We don’t replace your installer

  • We don’t usually replace components - your local engineer or manufacturer is better placed to carry out repairs that require a repeat visit cost effectively

Our role is to bring patience and clarity where systems, data, and expectations don’t quite align.

Who we work with

i-HEATPUMP supports:

  • Homeowners experiencing poor performance, high running costs, or comfort issues

  • Installers seeking independent verification & advanced fault-finding support

  • Developers, housing providers, and asset owners managing multiple systems

  • Organisations that value evidence-based decision-making over guesswork

In every case, our focus is the same: measured performance, clear explanations, and practical outcomes.

Our philosophy

Low-carbon heating will only succeed if systems perform well after the handover paperwork is complete.

That means better visibility, better diagnostics, and tools that work with engineers - not against them.

We believe:

  • Blame doesn’t fix systems - understanding does

  • Good data should reduce time on site, not increase it

  • Engineers deserve insight, not noise

  • End users deserve comfort, confidence, transparency and evidence

  • i-HEATPUMP was founded by Ross Kirkland in 2026.
Drawing on a broad practical, academic, and professional background spanning construction and engineering, renewable energy technologies, and data analysis, Ross spent the previous three years working with a leading HVAC manufacturer.

Through daily interaction with heat-pump installers and service engineers, a clear pattern emerged: the technology was advancing faster than the support available to those expected to install, maintain, and troubleshoot it.

i-HEATPUMP was created to bridge that gap — providing clearer diagnostics, better technical support, and practical tools that benefit both engineers in the field and the customers they serve.
